Friday, June 24th, 2011 Whitehorse

Had a 9 AM travel briefing then a ride share to the SS Klondike paddle wheeler. We rode with Chris and Mary. The tour at the ship was very interesting.  The Klondike is one of the largest sternwheelers to ply the Yukon River.   Originally launched in l937.  Carried food, mail and passengers.  Took one cord of wood to fuel it for an hour.  We were in 2 groups, men vs. women.
After tour we went over to an eagle’s nest but the eagle was gone. Then went downtown to the visitor’s center and had a quick lunch at Tim Horton’s.  Stopped at the Whitehorse Dam and Fish Ladder.  The Yukon River was dammed in l954 to provide hydro-electric power and provide flood control.  The following year the world’s longest wooden fish ladder was built to allow spawning salmon to reach the creeks where they were born.   We had a 2 PM tour of Yukon Brewery. It wasn’t much to talk about. We had small samples of about  6 beers after the tour. Gil and Jenna joined us for the tour. We drove out to the airport to see the World’s Largest Weathervane – a DC-3 mounted on a pedestal that rotates with the wind. Took a guided tour of the Yukon transportation museum which explained  the gold rush fever and stampede. Then went to the Beringia Interpretive Center. It was about prehistoric animals and the remains that have been found in the Yukon area. When we returned back to the park, Roni and I joined a group by Art’s RV for hot dogs, snacks, and fresh curly potato chips made by JW and Les. Sat and talked for quite awhile. Very light out so unless you look at your watch, you think it is 7 p.m. only to find out it is near mid-night.

Always fun trying the local brew!

You would never think this is a weather vane.  I actually saw it move almost 90 degrees.

Museums and more museums!!!
